THE current site of Paphos town hall likely used to be an ancient graveyard, it emerged on Wednesday, after six tombs were found in the area during works to unify the squares.
Deputy mayor Makis Rousis said if Kato Paphos antiquities were highlighted and covered in concrete, it would be Cyprus’ “small Rome.”
The tombs are believed to belong to the Greco Roman period.
According to the antiquities department, the entire Paphos town centre is known to be an ancient graveyard.
Several tombs have been found over time, Rousis said, while the latest excavations were conducted during sewerage system constructions.
“Paphos is not just a city, but the touch of a goddess,” he added.
