
A 34-year-old man from Paphos died on Sunday after his motorcycle crashed into a car on the Fasoula to Nikoklia road at 11.30am.
The man was transferred to the Paphos general hospital where he died some three hours later.
The 67-year-old driver of the car was also injured and was taken to hospital where she was kept for treatment. Her husband, 89, who was also in the car, was not injured.
In another accident, in the early hours, a man, 19, also from Paphos, was critically injured after the car he was driving veered off course crashed into two trees before stopping. The accident occurred at around 12.40am in Emba.
Police said on Sunday that five people died in road accidents the past 10 days.
As part of their road safety awareness campaign, police said in a statement that whatever the cause of fatal road accidents, “the result is the same, and it is tragic and irreversible”.
Drivers ought to understand the necessity of obeying the traffic tules, “the need, that is, to protect their lives, but also the lives of others,” the police statement said.
If the increasing numbers of victims of fatal road accidents cannot convince someone to change their ways, would words have an impact, the statement said, before giving the following advice:
“The next time we sit behind the wheel, let us consider for a few seconds the consequences, bring to mind the tragic images of a mother and a father looking for their child, children wondering when their father or mother will return.”
